The Katz Policy Institute of Benjamin Rose was officially launched on Friday, September 28, at Kethley House. Robert B. Hudson, PhD, professor and chair of social policy at Boston University , presented the policy institute's inaugural lecture, titled “ The Older Americans Act: Still Kickin' After All These Years .”

Family, friends and colleagues were on hand to honor the policy institute's namesake, Sidney Katz, MD. Dr. Katz is Distinguished Scholar at the Benjamin Rose Institute (BRI) and has a long, storied career in geriatrics and gerontology. The Index of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), for which Dr. Katz was principal author, continues to be the benchmark for assessing physical function in older adults 50 years after its development.

The Katz Policy Institute was created to expand BRI's involvement in educational outreach and public policy development. Ultimately, the KPI will promote collaborative work among BRI's programs and with partner organizations; inform the development of BRI's public policy positions; and contribute to public discourse and education on policy issues related to quality of life for older adults.

Aligning the Aging Network

In July 2007, the Benjamin Rose Institute entered into a three-year agreement with the U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA). The objective was to help area agencies on aging and others in the Aging Services Network to implement changes mandated by the 2006 reauthorization of the Older Americans Act.
