Tips for Visiting Your Legislator

Remember a lot of people will contact legislators to provide their input on different legislation, policies, programs and issues so make YOUR contact standout.

When meeting with legislators:

•  Schedule an appointment and state why you want to see the legislator

•  Be ready to meet with the legislative aide if you cannot see the legislator.

•  Be prepared.

•  Do your research so that you have the correct information about the legislation, policies, program or issue that you want to discuss.

•  Be prepared to answer questions and stay β€œon message.”

•  If you don't know the answer to a question let the legislator know that you will find the answer and get back to them.

•  Clearly identify what you want the legislator to do; introduce a bill, support a bill, not support a bill, act on a particular issue.

•  Remain professional in your approach even if the legislator does not agree with your position or concern.

•  Keep the meeting brief 10 – 15 minutes unless the legislator offers more time

•  Wrap up the meeting with anything that you believe was agreed upon

•  Leave a one page handout with key information

•  Give the legislator or aide your contact information

•  Thank the legislator or aide for their time
