Tips for Writing Your Legislator

Remember a lot of people will contact legislators to provide their input on different legislation, policies, programs and issues so make YOUR contact stick out.

When writing or e-mailing a legislator:

•  The suggested style is:

The Honorable _______________________

United States (State of Ohio ) Senate (Representative)

Address

Dear Senator ______________ or Dear Representative _______________

•  Try to stick to one page and if writing in longhand, write legibly

•  In the first paragraph, state your purpose

•  If you are writing about a bill, site the name and number of the bill

•  Support your position with the rest of the letter

•  Be factual and support your position with how the legislation, etc. impacts you or people you are concerned about

•  Avoid emotional and/or philosophical statements

•  Say what you would like the legislator to do

•  Thank the legislator for their support

•  Be sure to include your name, address and e-mail address
