Viktor Schreckengost:
A man of many styles

As he turns 100, Viktor Schreckengost looks back on an art-design-teaching career that spanned more than 70 years and pushed the boundaries of design, visual art and functional art far into the 21 st century. Along the way, he also changed the way we live. One day, while he was out driving, he counted 32 items—from bicycles to street lamps to lawn mowers—that he'd had a hand in designing. Always, he says, his creations were a blend of art and utility. “I don't think there is any way to separate the two,” he said in an afternoon interview at his Cleveland Heights home. Walter "Walt" Nosal
During his 57 years at John Carroll University – 39 as a professor and eventual chair of the Departments of Education and Counseling and Testing Services and 33 as “assistant without portfolio” – he achieved that goal, and more. Through the innovative counseling program he set up at the university (now housed in the Walter S. Nosal Counseling and Testing Center), he's helped thousands of Northeast Ohioans onto the path that turned their personal and professional hopes, dreams and aspirations into realities.

Richard Fleischman

Maury Feren
Three generations of Clevelanders have grown up seeing, listening to, or reading what food expert and entrepreneur Maury Feren has to say about the health benefits of eating well, the culinary benefits of cooking creatively, and the fiscal benefits of savvy produce shopping. During a late afternoon interviewed with the 89-year-old Maury—and that's what everyone who knows him calls him—in his sun-lit and “art”fully decorated Cleveland Heights condo, shared his thoughts on everything from being Cleveland's alimentary go-to-guy to the joys and challenges he's experiencing caring for his wife Bess, who has Alzheimer's disease.
