The lecture convenes advocates to explore potential policy approaches to important aging. This year, the 19th annual Katz Policy Lecture will examine groundbreaking research and innovations in dementia care. Dr. David Reuben, Archstone Professor at UCLA and leading expert on aging and dementia care, will discuss comprehensive dementia care, provide updates on the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) payment model, and present findings from the Dementia-Care Study (D-CARE), Lastly, Dr. Reuben will highlight future directions in dementia care policy and research.
Following the keynote address, a reactor panel of industry experts will provide their insights and engage in a discussion on the importance of translating research into practice and the ramifications of both the D-CARE study and the GUIDE program. Whether you’re a caregiver, healthcare professional, researcher, or advocate, this lecture will provide valuable information and actionable insights to help advance the field of dementia care.
The Katz Policy Lecture was established in 2007 in honor of the late Sidney Katz, MD, Benjamin Rose’s Distinguished Scholar. Dr. Sidney Katz — physician, scientist, teacher, mentor, author and public servant — pioneered the concept of active aging, championed the development of the field of geriatric care, and was responsible for the creation of local and national programs to enhance quality of life and improve long-term services for older adults.

David B. Reuben, MD

Dr. Reuben is Archstone Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and is Director of the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program and the UCLA Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) program.

Dr. Reuben is a past President of the American Geriatrics Society. He served for 8 years on the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Board of Directors, including as Chair. Dr. Reuben served as Chief of the UCLA Division of Geriatrics for 31 years. He is a member of the National Advisory Council on Aging for the National Institute on Aging.
In 2012, Dr. Reuben received one of the first CMMI Innovations Challenge awards to develop a model program to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with dementias. In 2018, he was awarded a multi-site PCORI- and NIA-funded pragmatic trial (D-CARE) to compare the effectiveness of health system-based versus community-based dementia care versus usual care. Dr. Reuben is also the Principal Investigator of a grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation to disseminate the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program. He served as joint Principal Investigator of the PCORI/NIA-sponsored STRIDE Study, the largest fall injury prevention clinical trial to date, and led the development and implementation of the intervention.
Dr. Reuben continues to provide primary care for frail older persons, including making house calls. In his spare time, Dr. Reuben has written 10 plays and lyrics for 20 songs with composer Sidney Sharp. A compilation of the first 10 has been recorded.
