Michael Matlock, a retired educator, worked in different capacities with diverse groups of students in the Cleveland Municipal School District. That work helped familiarize him with some of the wrap-around services within our community that help those in need.

As his 83-years-young mother, Connie Matlock, began experiencing problems with memory loss and vision (since corrected), she decided to stop driving. Mr. Matlock gradually became her sole caregiver and sought help from Benjamin Rose and the WeCare…Because You Do℠ program where he was connected with Lauri Scharf, MSHS, LSW, a master trainer and the program’s lead care consultant.

Consultation sessions allowed the Matlock’s to make joint decisions and set goals that have kept Ms. Connie safe, protected and more confident to age in place.

“Lauri gave me all kinds of materials and made a variety of recommendations that assisted Ms. Connie to remain independent and engaged in the neighborhood,” says Mr. Matlock.

Other referral sources helped them make their home safer by installing grab bars, a gate at the top of the basement steps, and pathway lighting. They also installed some cameras – whatever they needed to do to better ensure Ms. Connie’s safety and comfort.

Taking a holistic approach to Ms. Connie’s overall health, Mr. Matlock has focused efforts on her mind, body and spirit, while handling other health concerns – like recent dental issues – when they arise. Along with the support they receive from attending monthly Alzheimer’s Association social events, Lauri also introduced them to some innovative technology including Alexa, Amazon’s cloud-based voice service.

“When Ms. Connie’s anxiety symptoms get elevated triggering triggers behaviors of hiding, nesting and repetitive questions, we ask Alexa to play favorite music by Angela Bofil, Aretha Franklin and Al Green,” says Mr. Matlock. “The music and singing along helps Ms. Connie get back on track.”

Mr. Matlock is grateful to the beacon of light of Lauri and Benjamin Rose for connecting them with resources to allow Ms. Connie to flourish and age in place safely at home.
